Why do we need the Green Carpet Fashion Awards - and why should you care about them?
The GCFA and the Sharing the Table Series are unique spaces fostering intersectional and intercultural connection.
In 2024 the GCFAs brought together a powerful group of changemakers at an intimate dinner in Los Angeles during Oscar Week, including Donatella Versace, Zendaya, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Annie Lennox, Helen Hunt, Quannah Chasinghorse, former Irish president Mary Robinson, garment worker and union leader Kalpona Akter, Ugandan presidential candidate and Oscar nominee Bobi Wine and his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi, Greenland Indigenous climate activist and leader Angaangaq Angakkorsuaq, and some of the most inspiring and active young climate activists and influencers. All shared the table, all were equal in the room, sharing stories and learning from each other.
As the IPCC continues to warn us, we need our leaders to take immediate and massive action in line with the science. We also need the public to care and engage — so that they can help put sustained pressure on our leaders to act.
“Reflecting on the attention economy - how do we harness attention towards the issues that matter? How do we channel our culture’s fascination with the entertainment industry towards critical conversations of our time? The GCFA channels Hollywood’s awards season towards a night centering frontline activists across interconnected struggles – from mass incarceration, indigenous rights, garment worker justice, preserving democracy, and more.”
ADITI MAYER, Visual Storyteller and Sustainability Activist – GCFA Young Leader
That is why the UN and others have gotten behind this project. They understand the power of popular culture, fashion, and entertainment to bring about change. This year, U.N. Secretary General António Guterres accepted the Sage award in acknowledgement of his courage, clarity of message, and unwavering work on environmental and social justice.
Don’t just take our word for it…

WHAT YOUNG LEADERS ACROSS SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE SAY
“As people that want to see our communities reclaim healing, connection and joy – how do we embody the mirrors we want our communities to see themselves in? The GCFA is unique in its careful recognition of those reflecting the journeys that will lead us towards a more connected, harmonious and just world – through the lens of conscious creation. It’s a space where people carrying such unique relationships to land can celebrate and showcase what it means for our communities to move harmoniously in commitment to life.”

“GCFA embraces diverse voices globally. Recognizing Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in leadership, impact-driven storytelling, and their activism is crucial for amplifying their voices in climate action. GCFA and the team make us feel welcomed, seen, and heard. If Not Us Then Who loves partnering with Eco Age and GCFA. What an inspiring team and network.”
IF NOT US THEN WHO
“I have always believed that fashion is an instrument capable of promoting positive change in the world as it involves connecting with fundamental themes of our times, such as preserving the environment, which is essential for our survival. The connection with Mother Earth has the power to open hearts and minds to promote this change. Nature inspires us to be better and to recognize the sacred in every living creature. How can one look at the Amazon and not see this? Seeing all this life inspires us to preserve it, and initiatives like the Green Carpet Fashion Awards demonstrate that this is possible.”
SONIA GUAJAJARA, BRAZIL MINISTER FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
